Swimming Olympia

Swimming Olympia was an underwater “tethered” deep-sea submersible built by the Kidd family of West Orange, New Jersey. It was towed to locations all along the Atlantic Coast to allow people to observe marine life in its natural habitat without disturbing it, much like Jacques Cousteau’s Calypso. Swimming Olympia also hosted occasional publicity events, such as hosting the Silver Springs dolphin named “Sophie”, who was released into the wild in 1971.

Swimming Olympia was purchased at auction by Jim Schulze of Fort Lauderdale for $1,000 in 1976 after Kidd went out of business. The submersible sat on his property until 1995 when Schulze donated it to the Miami Seaquarium, where it is open to the public.

Swimming Olympia (TV series)

The Swimming Olympia was a local television show that aired on WFTV Channel 9 in Orlando, Florida from 1957-1961. The host of the program was Bill Davis who used the Swimming Olympia to travel around Central Florida filming underwater shots. The production allowed viewers to see the wildlife beneath the surface of Florida’s lakes during an era when home video cameras were not yet invented, and most people had never seen anything but black & white television on their TV sets.

Bill Davis also hosted two other local children’s shows in Orlando, Bill Davis’ Adventureland (1958-1960) and Bill Davis’ Fun ‘N Games (1960-1961).

A former Disney animator, Charles Shows, produced the television series. He also designed the Swimming Olympia submersible. The show was sponsored by Jackson Dairy which is now part of Dean Foods Company.
